| Minister insists water transport on track |
AGRICULTURE Minister Michalis Polynikis yesterday denied claims made in the press that the government and Ocean Tankers had terminated their contract regarding water transfer from Greece.
“The contract will be completed upon the transfer of 8 million cubic tonnes of water and it is expected to be completed around the end of March…Therefore any suggestions or any articles mentioning a termination of the contract are far from being true.”
According to Polynikis, the infrastructure built for the anchorage and the underwater pipeline will remain as government projects.
“As regards to the water reserves to cover the summer needs, there is a shortage of about 80,000 cubic meters of water, which will be limited to the maximum extent possible as part of our efforts finally to resolve the water problem and if deemed necessary water cuts will continue with a sensible approach,” the Minister added.
“We are working at a fast pace and we are ready to deal with it with the same seriousness as we did the previous summer,” Polynikis added.
Polynikis was optimistic regarding the timeframe for the construction of the desalination plants, despite the many problems associated with appeals and objections.
“In 2009 we will be able to complete these projects and reach the desired effect, which is none other than not having to depend on rainfall.”
