UN envoy too pushy
NICOSIA - President Anastasiades was angered with UN envoy on Cyprus Alexander Downer for being too pushy, insiders said on Sunday.
Downer's aides in Nicosia were asking whether the interlocutor on the peace talks would also be attending May 29's dinner in Nicosia between the President and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu when it was made clear to the UN that the process begins in the Autumn, they added.
An interlocutor has not even been appointed yet, and the dinner is only of a social nature was the message sent from the presidential palace.
This was also stressed in the letter sent to the UN Secretary General on Friday.
At the same time, reports said that in a spirit of goodwill, the UN have proposed that the dinner takes place on May 30 rather than the 29th which is the dark anniversary of the fall of Constantinople into Turkish hands.
The upcoming dinner will be the first meeting of Anastasiades with Eroglu since his election victory in February.
