Politicians have very often a legal academic background. Among all professions why do lawyers in Cyprus but also globally show an extensive interest to politics? Statistically the majority of the Cyprus presidents 4/7 had a legal academic background. Spyros Kyprianou, Glafkos Clerides , Tasos Papadopoulos, & now Nikos Anastasiades.3/4 also maintained legal offices in Cyprus before their presidency. At lower political levels we also see a tendency among lawyers to work in the parliament, in the ministries and other governmental authorities. Politics reflects the society in different levels and build an arena whereof different factors interact. An essential factor is the legal fundament, the legislations of the state. Our point is that lawyers because of their legal knowledge’s, the good practice of the language and their experience of interacting with different people can be associated with their choice of doing a political career. |

Lawyers debatably have several benefits over businessmen in regards to politics. First, lawyers embodies advocacy. Their skills in defending clients, demonstrating rights, their rhetoric talents provide a vital advantage. A Cyprus lawyer’s profession rotates around advocating on particular matters on behalf of its clients, alike to a politician’s advocacy for the interests of the state and constitution. In spite of everything law can easily be considered as an extension of the democratic procedure. Lawyers are qualified in crossing through policy and legislation and this gives the legal profession a helping hand in comprehending how society works, which in turn helps them serve the country better. Fundamentally lawyers are also assured by ethical liabilities to the client, the profession and the society on the whole. No such equivalent exists in the world of business. The legal profession is inflexibly ingrained in the principles of justice, ethics and freedom. |
